A VICAR and a headteacher with a fear of heights were among those who whizzed down a 130ft zip wire during a fundraising event at Holy Trinity Church in Ossett.

Sue Vickerman, head at Gawthorpe Community Primary School, did the slide to raise £500 for a memorial garden for pupil Courtney Davies, who died last year.

The nine-year-old lost her battle against a rare degenerative disease last August and pupils are helping design the garden.

Mrs Vickerman said: “It was absolutely horrible. The zip wire itself was fine and it was quite exciting coming down. But you had to climb over the parapet to get onto the ledge and lower yourself down, which was very scary.

“I’m glad I did it though and I’ve raised over £400.”

The Rev Paul Maybury, vicar of Gawthorpe and Ossett, also zipped down the wire to raise £1,000 for a new heating system at the church.
