Two of the injured were freed by firefighters following the collision in Chapeltown Road, Chapeltown, at its junction with Harehills Avenue, near the site of the former Hayfield pub.

A man was trapped in one vehicle, and a woman in the second.

Firefighters worked with paramedics to free the two people.

Two men aged 35 and 20 were subsequently arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said: "At 2.20am on Saturday, a Mercedes car failed to stop for road traffic officers on Neville Street in Leeds. The Mercedes was pursued by the police vehicle which had its lights and sirens on. At 2.25am the Mercedes was in collision with a VW Passat at the junction of Chapeltown Road and Harehills Avenue.

"The 36 year old male driver of the Passat and its two passengers a 25 year old woman and a 25 year old man together with the 35 year old male driver of Mercedes and the 20 year old male passenger were all taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

"At this time none of the injuries are believed to be life threatening".
Police said that, following the collision, suspected class A drugs and an amount of cash were found in the Mercedes.

The Police Professional Standards department has been notified of the incident.
