A HARD-hitting campaign has been launched to highlight the dangers of deadly dance drug GHB among Leeds clubbers.
The YEP-backed project comes after a teenager is believed to have died after taking the liquid drug during a night out in the city.

The 19-year-old's death is thought to be the first so far in Yorkshire this year.

A campaign has been set up by one of Leeds' most popular night clubs, Mission.

It aims to raise awareness about the dangers of taking GHB and the hard line taken against anyone caught supplying drugs.

Any one who takes the risk of even passing on drugs to friends can be charged with supplying and could end up with a hefty jail sentence.

Shaun Wilson, a director of Club Mission, said: "There has been a lot of negative press about drugs in clubs, and we felt it was time for the operators to take responsibility for getting these messages about the risks and dangers across to the public.

"We believe it's important to support the authorities and feel by delivering these messages directly from the licensed premises themselves."

GHB – gamma hydroxy butyrate – has become the substance of choice among many clubbers who say it provides a stronger, longer lasting high than ecstasy.

The liquid was originally developed as an anaesthetic but later condemned as too dangerous by doctors as it sedates and can cause uninhibited behaviour.

Before launching the project, directors at Club Mission held consultation meetings with all the various agencies and authorities to seek their advice and agreement for the project.

West Yorkshire Police, Safer Leeds, Crimestoppers,Yorkshire Evening Post and Walker Morris Solicitors are all backing the campaign.

Darren Rothwell, Operations Director at Club Mission said 'We've held meetings with the authorities and agencies including West Yorkshire Police, to understand the issues and ensure the messages we are delivering are the right ones."
