GORGEOUS Janeena Basra has sparked a cross-border battle of beauty after scooping a title across the Pennines.
The stunning 23-year old from Farnley, Leeds, won the regional Miss Halton Pride contest in Cheshire to get through to the final of the Miss England contest.

If she wins that, the university student will represent her country in the Miss World pageant in Ukraine later this year.

However as a Leeds native triumphing on 'the other side', Janeena's victory has angered some people in Cheshire.

A local website has comments such as "Where is the justice in a girl from Leeds being crowned?" and "How is she going to fulfil her duties as Miss Halton Pride?"

Another branded her win "ridiculous" and called on Janeena to renounce her crown and "realise that her title is a joke".

But Janeena – a former Leeds Girls' High School pupil who studies in Manchester – said she will be "honoured and delighted" to represent the people of Halton.

"I have not broken any rules," she said. "As long as you are British it's fine and I study in Manchester. A girl from London could win Miss Leeds.

"I'm just taking things in my stride and laughing it (the criticism] off. I'm not going to let it get me down. But I'm representing Halton and I will be honoured to do so."

Pageant rules dictate that contestants do not have to originate from a particular area to represent it.

Janeena had hoped to enter the Miss Leeds contest, but missed the deadline.

It's been a tough road to the title for Janeena, who revealed she had been assaulted by a jealous girl in Manchester just two weeks before the regional heat.

"I was attacked because I had entered a beauty pageant and I had been promoting myself," she said. "I had a swollen lip and couldn't talk or eat. When I looked in the mirror I thought there was no way the judges would even look at me."

But she did win and goes through to the Miss England pageant in London on July 18

Janeena is studying for a Masters in Naturopathic Nutrition at Manchester University after completing her BSc in Human Nutrition. She is hoping to start her own health clinic.
