Rod McPhee asks: why don't all Leeds cab drivers already have 'The Knowledge'?
That's what I want to know.

As much as we should be welcoming moves to ensure all those behind the wheel of mini-cabs know where they're going, it does beg the question: why don't they all have 'The Knowledge' now?

We're already more than aware of the fact that about half of them don't (which gives the other half that do know their way round the city an unjustified bad name.)

The facts bear this out too. Of the 5,000 or so private hire drivers working in Leeds, only 2,700 are from within the city limits.

So we invariably end up having to give directions to someone from Dewsbury or Bradford who otherwise couldn't get you to Leeds railway station unless they were actually clamped on a train track and pointed in the right direction.

As for sat nav we all know how reliable that is, plus it doesn't prevent you staggering drunkenly from club to cab, asking the driver to take you to Burley then falling asleep and waking up in Burley in Wharfedale.

And that's before you run the lottery of how much they're going to charge you once they've taken you round the houses insisting it's the quickest and most direct route.

As much as the move to install The Knowledge should be applauded it should have been done years ago.
