Can the Lounge at the Radisson fight off the surrounding competition when it comes to serving up a tasty lunch?
SAT in the middle of the plethora of restaurants that is Leeds city centre, the Lounge at the Radisson is not the first place you'd think of for lunch.
In fact it's one of the last places judging by the emptiness of the spot which at first glance appears to be a restaurant in its own right. It's not. A walk through the hotel reception, leads you to this rather sparse eaterie which is half packed with bar couches and half with elegant dining tables.
On a Sunday afternoon, many of these were empty, prompting the bar staff to ask if we would be more comfortable eating our lunch in the bar area.
And so, dodging the tumbleweeds, we settled for a couch and felt very much like we were sat in a hotel waiting room rather than a cosy bar.
This is not the place for a comfy lunch but it is the perfect spot for a wholesome roast.
We went for the Sunday lunch menu which has a little something for everyone with two courses for £11.95.
In true Yorkshire style, my starter was a homemade giant Yorkshire pudding with onion gravy. It was a real treat. It was absolutely huge and comes loaded with rich, slightly thick, delicious gravy. If you've got a Yorkshire pudding craving one Sunday, this is the place.
I then went for a beef roast, with yet another giant pudding, gravy, a huge roast potato and veg.
The potato was awful. It was far too dry and tasted like a clump of cardboard but the rest of the meal was fine and filling and again the Yorkshire pudding was second to none.
My partner went for a smoked trout with crayfish and salsa. The portion was small, with little fish, but the sauce was tangy and tasty. Then it was a creamed tagliatelle with bacon, tomatoes and herbs for main which he says was lovely. It looked creamy and filling and the herbs complimented the dish perfectly, apparently.
This was dished up with what looked like a rogue potato wedge on the side. Similarly, this was like chewing through card and seemed a bizarre side dish to put with the pasta.
The Lounge is in a great position for visitors and shoppers but there are so many fantastic restaurants in the area, this would rate low down on the list. If it's atmosphere you're after steer well clear but for a top rate Yorkshire pud, walk this way.
